Frequently asked questions

Answers about registration, payment, bib numbers, results and WSDC points.

Registration & changes

Does scoring.dance cost anything for dancers?

No. Using scoring.dance is free for dancers. The price of each competition is set by the event, and you pay it to the event organiser.

I made a mistake in my registration (division, role, name). How do I fix it?

Open your personal status page. The link is in your registration confirmation email. There you can correct your profile and add or remove competitions until your bib number has been assigned.

If something can't be changed there, tell the team at the competition check-in desk when you pick up your bib number. Plan a few extra minutes.

How do I add or remove a competition?

On your status page (link in your confirmation email) use add another competition or remove a competition you no longer want to dance. This works until registration closes or until you have checked in.

After the check-in, changes are only possible at the check-in desk. Some events also offer a last-minute registration with online payment until the first round starts; if so, you will see it on your status page.

I didn't get a confirmation email or QR code.

Please check your spam folder first. If the email isn't there, use Resend my registration link on the registration page of the event: enter the email address you registered with and we send the link again.

You don't need the QR code to check in. At the desk your name or email address is enough. If the QR code doesn't show in your email, your mail app is probably blocking images; the code is also on your status page.

The registration page says "already registered". What now?

You are already registered for this event. To add more competitions, open your status page (link in your confirmation email) and use add another competition. You don't need to register a second time.

Lost the email? Use Resend my registration link on the registration page.

Payment, receipts & refunds

How do I pay my competition fee?

The fee is set by the event and paid to the event organiser.

  1. Online: if the organiser has activated online payment, your status page shows a Pay online button (card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal, depending on the event). If you pay online, you can use the express lane at the check-in.
  2. At the event: otherwise you pay at the competition check-in desk when you pick up your bib number.
Why don't I see a "Pay online" button?

There are three possible reasons:

  • The event has not activated online payment. Then you pay at the check-in desk.
  • You have already checked in. After the check-in, payments and changes are handled at the desk.
  • Everything is already paid. Your status page then shows All paid.
I need an invoice or a receipt for my payment.

Receipt: on your status page, every payment in the payment list has a small PDF button. It creates a receipt for that payment with the organiser, the amount, the date and the payment method.

Invoice: invoices are issued by the event organiser, because the event sells the competition entry and receives the money. Please contact the event director of your event, usually via the event website. scoring.dance only provides the competition software.

Can I get a refund (injury, paid twice, can't come)?

Refunds are decided and paid by the event director, not by scoring.dance, because the money goes to the event. Please write to the event with your registration number and your payment receipt (PDF button on your status page).

If you remove a competition on your status page before the check-in, the amount already paid stays as credit for your other competitions of this event.

Check-in & bib numbers

When and where do I get my bib number?

At the competition check-in desk at the event. Bib numbers are not sent in advance.

You can pick it up until 2 hours before the first round of the day on which you dance your first round, unless the event sets a different time. Your status page shows the exact deadline. Without a bib number you can't compete, so come early; outside the busy times there are usually no queues.

Do I need the QR code? What is "bib to go"?

The QR code makes your check-in faster, but you don't need it: your name or email address is enough at the desk. You find the code in your confirmation email, on your status page, in the PDF of your registration and in the Apple Wallet or Google Wallet pass.

Bib to go is offered by some events: if everything is paid and you support scoring.dance on Patreon, you can check in online and get your bib number in advance. You then only collect the prepared bib at the desk.

Where should I wear my bib number?

Pin it clearly visible on your back with safety pins, so the judges can read it while you dance. Leaders usually wear it higher, between the shoulder blades; followers a bit lower, for example at the waistband, where the partner's hand is least likely to cover it.

Divisions, roles & WSDC points

Which Jack&Jill division may I register for?

For WSDC events this depends on your WSDC points (WSDC Registry Event Rules, Chart 3). "Allowed" means you may move up, "required" means you must.

DivisionAllowed to move upRequired to move up
Newcomerany time1 Newcomer or 1 Novice point
Novice16 Novice points30 Novice points or 1 Intermediate point
Intermediate30 Intermediate points45 Intermediate points or 1 Advanced point
Advanced60 Advanced points90 Advanced points or 1 All-Star point
All-Star150 All-Star points225 All-Star points
Champions1 Champion point or 150 All-Star points10 Champion points or 225 All-Star points

The registration page checks your points automatically and shows the reason if a division is locked. With 60 Advanced points you may dance All-Star, but automatic All-Star discounts of an event may only apply once you have All-Star points.

May I dance both roles, or Strictly and Jack&Jill?

In each single competition you dance one role only, unless the event explicitly allows both. Across different competitions the WSDC rules let you dance your primary or your secondary role, for example Jack&Jill as follower and Strictly as leader.

Most events allow you to dance up in Strictly: someone who dances Novice may also enter Intermediate or Open Strictly. Many events require a different partner in each Strictly if you enter more than one. The event rules decide. The registration page shows the reason directly below a locked option. If you are unsure, please ask the Head Judge of the event.

How many WSDC points do I get, and how is the tier decided?

The tier depends on the number of different competitors per role (leaders and followers are counted separately). Leaders and followers can therefore be in different tiers and get different points.

How do I get a WSDC ID?

You don't apply for a WSDC ID. It is created automatically the first time you earn WSDC points at a registered event, that means when you place in a final in a position that earns points.

After the event has sent its results to the WSDC, your new WSDC ID appears in the WSDC registry with your points. Tip: always register with the same name and spelling, so your points stay linked to you.

Results & start lists

Where do I find the results of an event, or my own results?

Results are on the results page of each event. Past events are listed under Past events & results.

Your own placements across all events are on your dancer page scoring.dance/wsdc/registry/<your WSDC ID>.html. With the CompPass you get a pass with your WSDC ID and points for competitions.

I can't find an event or its results on scoring.dance.

scoring.dance only shows events that used scoring.dance for their competitions. If an event used a different system, or did not take place that year, there are no results here.

For WSDC events you find the points of all registered events in the official WSDC registry at worldsdc.com. For events outside the WSDC (for example many Bachata or Zouk events), results are sometimes only published by the organiser, so please ask the event directly.

Where are the prelim and semi-final scores? Why don't I see the Chief Judge's score?

Each round of an event has its own result list on the results page. Whether the detailed raw scores of every judge are public is decided by the event.

The order in prelims and semis doesn't show the Chief Judge's opinion. The Chief Judge's scores are hidden on purpose and are only used to break a tie. If an event publishes the raw scores, they include all judges, including the Chief Judge.

My WSDC points are in the WSDC registry but not on scoring.dance.

scoring.dance updates the WSDC data every three days, so please wait a few days.

If the points are still missing after that, the reason is usually a different spelling of your name at the event registration and in the WSDC registry. Always register with the same name as in the registry and add your WSDC ID.

Where do I find the marshalling lists (heats, start lists)?

During the event, the published start lists of every round are on the Competition Wall of the event, which you can open from the event page. You can also turn on notifications there to hear about new start lists.

About a week after the event the wall switches to the results, so marshalling lists of past events are no longer shown. The results of every round stay available.

Profile, privacy & contact

My country or the pronunciation of my name is wrong.

You can change your country in the profile on your status page. For the pronunciation of your name (used by the emcee), or if the country still shows wrong on your dancer page, write to [email protected] with your WSDC ID and the correct value, and we set it for you.

My name in the WSDC registry is wrong, or I got married.

Names in the WSDC registry can only be changed by the WSDC. Send your request with your WSDC ID to [email protected] and we forward it to the WSDC. After the WSDC has changed it, scoring.dance takes the new name over with the next update.

Can my name be removed from the result lists?

Results stay published. They are part of the public competition record and of the WSDC registry, and other dancers and events rely on them, for example to check divisions.

If you have a special reason, write to [email protected]. We look at every request individually. Data that our chatbots store about you can always be deleted, see Data deletion.

How do I get notifications (push, Telegram, Messenger)?

Your status page has a Notifications card:

  • Browser push: news and new start lists of the event.
  • Telegram (@DanceScoreBot) and Facebook Messenger: connect your WSDC ID by sending /wsdc followed by your number. You then get your check-in confirmation and your heat when a start list is published.
  • Apple Wallet / Google Wallet: the pass updates itself with your bib number, marshalling call, callbacks and placements.

On iPhones, browser push only works after adding scoring.dance to your home screen.

How do I contact the support?

Use the chat at the bottom right of every page. It answers most questions right away and forwards everything else to us. You can also write to [email protected].

For questions about prices, discounts, refunds or the schedule of an event, please contact the event directly.

For event directors

What does scoring.dance cost for an event?

The software is free. There is no licence and no setup fee. You only pay the work and the travel expenses of your scorer.

How do I find a scorer?

Trained scorers work in many countries. You find them on the scorer page and can request one directly from your event dashboard.

If there is nobody in your region yet: anyone who wants to learn gets trained and first scores a few events together with an experienced scorer (shadowing).

What do I need technically?

An internet connection and tablets for the judges. scoring.dance runs in the browser, so no installation is needed. Ask your scorer whether they bring tablets for your event.

Phones work in an emergency, but tablets are easier to use and look more professional.

Do I get registration and ticketing too?

Competition registration is included: dancers register online, scoring.dance checks their divisions against the WSDC points and you manage everything in the event dashboard.

For festival tickets, passes and hotels there is our sister platform DanceApp. You can use scoring.dance with or without DanceApp.

How do I accept online payments for competitions?

In your event director dashboard under Payments:

  • Stripe: connect your own Stripe account (onboarding takes a few minutes) and choose who pays the transaction fees, you or the dancer.
  • PayPal: enter the email address of your PayPal account and, if you like, a fee surcharge in percent.

The money goes directly to your account. Dancers then see a Pay online button on their status page. Cash or card payment at the check-in desk is always possible as well.

How do our results get into the WSDC registry?

After the event, your scorer sends the result package to the WSDC: the WSDC form, the result report and the competitor lists. The WSDC charges a surcharge per registered event; it can be paid through scoring.dance and invoiced to you later, which you choose in your event dashboard.

The WSDC then publishes the points and asks you for the event update form for next year. If you combined divisions because of too few entries (for example All-Star and Champions), this must have been announced and offered separately beforehand, and it is reported as a combined division.

The registration doesn't open, although the dates are right.

Please check in your event settings:

  • Start and end of registration are interpreted in the time zone of the event. Check that the event has the right city and time zone.
  • An end date must be set; without it the registration page isn't shown.
  • The registration closes automatically when the end date or the end of the event has passed.
  • The dances of the event must be set (for example West Coast Swing), so the right registration form is used.
  • If your registration runs on DanceApp, the scoring.dance registration page forwards dancers to DanceApp.

If it still doesn't work, write to [email protected] with your event ID.

Is there an API?

Yes. Read-only APIs for events, results and WSDC data are documented on RapidAPI: scoring.dance API and dance3. Import APIs for registrations from your own system exist as well; ask [email protected] for access.

How can I have my event removed from scoring.dance?

Write to [email protected] from the email address of the event director and name the event. Events that have not taken place can be removed or hidden. Results of competitions that already took place stay published, because they are part of the public competition record.

For judges & scorers

How do I register as a judge, and how do I change a block?

Use the judge registration link you got from the Head Judge or the event. There you enter your details, your relations (partners, family) and your availability for every competition, for example competing if you dance in a division yourself.

If your plans change, simply register again with the same link: your new answers replace the old ones. If a competition still shows as blocked, the Head Judge has probably blocked it in the judges planner; please ask the Head Judge to release it.

How do I become a scorer?

Write to [email protected]. You learn the job by shadowing: you score a few real events together with an experienced scorer until you can run a competition on your own. Afterwards you appear on the scorer page, where event directors can book you.

Questions about prices, discounts, refunds or the schedule of an event? Please contact the event directly.
